Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing addressed his recent DUI charge when speaking to members of the media on Wednesday. Downing was arrested early last Friday morning following Tennessee’s 27-17 win against the Green Bay Packers and charged with driving under the influence and speeding.
“I’ve put my family through some things they don’t deserve,” Downing said. “I have an amazing wife and son who love me unconditionally and don’t want them to endure more than what I’ve brought on.”
Downing called it “devastating” that his actions brought negative attention to the Titans organization, ownership, coach Mike Vrabel, other coaches and players.
“I believe in myself as a man and I believe I will answer the bell to lead this offense going forward,” Downing said. “I thank coach Vrabel and (Titans general manager) Jon Robinson and (Titans owner) Mrs. Amy (Adams Strunk) for giving me the opportunity to lead this offense going into this weekend. And these guys in the locker room deserve for me to give my best efforts going forth in that.”
Downing declined to comment on the specifics of the circumstances that led to his arrest. He said he was previously aware of the rideshare program the Titans provide to all employees.
Asked whether the situation was the toughest challenge he’s faced as a coach, Downing responded: “Can’t think of much tougher.”
Downing, 42, is in his fourth season with the Titans and his second as the team’s offensive coordinator. Tennessee has boasted a top 10 rushing offense in both of his seasons leading the offense. The Titans (7-3) are set to host the Bengals (6-4) on Sunday.
