The Portugal FA have said Cristiano Ronaldo was chewing gum during their World Cup opener against Ghana, after a video emerged on social media that appeared to show the 37-year-old reaching into his shorts and eating something while on the pitch.

Portugal have told The Athletic, however, that Ronaldo was only chewing gum.

Ronaldo gave Portugal the lead with a second-half penalty against Ghana, before seeing the African side draw level shortly after thanks to Andre Ayew. Two goals in quick succession from Joao Felix and Rafael Leao, however, gave Portugal an unassailable lead despite a late consolation from Osman Bukari.

Ronaldo is playing at the World Cup as a free agent, having seen his contract at Manchester United mutually terminated shortly before Portugal began their tournament.

The forward had rejoined United in the summer of 2021, making 54 appearances and scoring 27 goals upon his return to the Old Trafford side.

Portugal continue their World Cup campaign with a match against Uruguay on Monday. They finish their group stage fixtures against South Korea next Friday.
