Legendary Croatia midfielder Luka Modric has said he is unsure whether the World Cup will be his final major tournament, but that he wants to play in the Nations League finals.
The 2024 European Championships are scheduled to be played in Germany, with Modric revealing he “did not know” whether he would play, and that it depended on whether he felt he was performing at a high level.
However, he firmly stated his intent to play in the upcoming Nations League finals in June 2023.
Croatia won their group in the autumn, putting them in the competition’s semi-finals, giving them a chance to win their first trophy as an independent nation.
The 37-year-old helped Croatia to third-place in a 2-1 win over Morocco, Croatia’s third medal at the tournament, having only qualified on six occasions.
Mislav Orsic scored a sensational winner after Achraf Dari had earlier cancelled out Josko Gvardiol’s opener.
Speaking to beIN Sports after the game about his future, Modric said: “First of all thank you. This medal is very important for us, for me, for Croatia as a national team and a country.
“With this medal we confirm that Croatia is playing an important role in world football. And we are leaving Qatar as winners.
“About my future? I do not know if I will play until the Euro in Germany. I need to go step by step. I am enjoying the national team and I feel happy. I still think I can perform at a high level.
“I want to continue until at least the Nations League. And afterwards we will see.”
Modric was a star performer at club level for Real Madrid last season, helping them to the Champions League title, beating Liverpool 1-0 in the final.
