Alabama hosts Auburn at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday in the annual Iron Bowl. The game will be broadcast by CBS. The Crimson Tide enter with a 9-2 overall record and a 5-2 SEC record. The Tigers are 5-6, 2-5.
The series
The Crimson Tide and Tigers have played 86 times since 1893. Alabama leads the series 48-37-1 with the latest meeting being a 24-22 win in 2021.
In the teams’ first matchup in 1893, Auburn won 32-22; these teams are no strangers to tight margins of victory with the tightest happening when the Tigers beat the Crimson Tide 28-27 in 2010. From 1902 to 1988, the game was played in a neutral location, known as the Iron Bowl in Birmingham.
Players to watch
Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner, might be playing his final game at Bryant-Denny Stadium before he gears up for the NFL Draft. Young is the No. 3 player on The Athletic’s NFL Draft midseason rankings. Despite not producing the same numbers this season, Young is still a big threat against the Tigers.
Auburn showcases two running backs with more than 100 rushing yards in each of the past two games. Tank Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter have carried the sluggish Auburn offense through its past two wins. Bigsby has 900 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, while Hunter has run for 541 yards and seven touchdowns.
The coaches
Saturday marks Williams’ fourth game as the Tigers’ interim coach, and he’s on the hunt for a big rivalry win this weekend. Williams is a former Auburn tailback who opened the 2003 Iron Bowl with an 80-yard touchdown run and ran for 204 yards in that game.
Alabama coach Nick Saban is 10-5 in the Iron Bowl, including a 6-1 mark at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama is 103rd nationally in turnover margin and Auburn is even worse at 199th.
