And with that…
Time for me to sign off. I think we can all agree that we enjoyed it. Let’s just say that.
Enjoy the rest of Day 5! The two remaining games promise to be crackers.
(I appreciate I also said that about this one. Onwards!)

A glitch in The (Nunez) Radar tonight
Interesting comparison here between Darwin Nunez’s efforts for Uruguay tonight, and what he has managed for Liverpool in the Premier League this season…

FULL TIME: Uruguay 0-0 South Korea
Well, there we are. A game that poodled along at times. The woodwork got involved and both sides seems to carry an intent to try to win it right up to the end.
But the defences were too strong, the necessary quality in the final third was often lacking and the reward was a goalless draw.
Still, I remain thankful for the experience of a ‘tactically intriguing’ 90 minutes and certainly adds to the tight nature of Group H, with Portugal and Ghana kicking off in an hour’s time.

Wider observations (90+7)
Now seems the time to mention that both of these sides are wearing wonderful kits. I’m a big fan.
Less of a fan of Varela’s haircut, if I’m honest.

FIFA time! (Should that catch on?)
This game was meandering to a draw about 10 minutes ago but then Valverde smashed the post from 25 yards out, then Son just missed with a long-range shot, then Valverde stopped a Korean break with a sliding tackle, which he celebrated like a goal-line stand.
We’re into FIFA time now and both sets of fans are giving it loads!

Nearly… Maybe (90+1)
The ball falls to Son and he drills a shot about a yard wide of the far post from outside the box. Before that, Valderde thumps the post with an exquisite shot of his own.
SEVEN minutes of added time on the way. Both sides still seem keen to try to win this.

One for the defences it seems
Luis Suarez was not effective tonight and off the pace against a very quick Korean back line. Uruguay manager Diego Alonso has added speed in the second half, bringing Nicolas de la Cruz and fresh legs on the left flank in Matias Vina. Edison Cavani replaced Suarez and has been lively, but the Koreans have done well to close down and repel each one of Uruguay’s attacks.

For clarity…
FIFA given Education City Stadium’s capacity as 44,667 – with the caveat that “capacities for specific matches may vary slightly”

Those present in the stadium are losing interest it seems
41,663 in here but – once again – there are rows of empty white seats starting to appear as we get to the sharp end of the game. Where are these people going? And most of the armchairs in the VVIP section below the press box were never full. What are these people doing instead?

Uruguay follow suit (78)
Uruguay make a double change of their own in response. Matias Vina and Nicolas de la Cruz enter the fray, with Vecino and Olivera making way.
Sad news. Olivera did not add to those two chances created in the first half. Sorry everyone. I’m trying to talk something up, honest.

Korea’s turn for a change or three (74)
Korean make their first substitutions – and they do it as a triple change.
Cho Gue-sung, Son Jun-ho and Lee Kang-in come on in place of Lee Jae-sung, Na Sang-ho and Hwang Ui-jo, who missed that great chance in the first half.
Let’s see if the changes have an impact.

Oh, hello Edinson (69)
Edinson Canavi just produced a touch, turn, burst of pace and shot inside the penalty area that has stood out like a sore thumb in this second half. Korea still defending the 18-yard box well, and the snuffled that shot quickly too. But that’s a nice glimpse of what could yet break this game out of its current stalemate.

Doubling down on the ‘tactically intriguing’ tagline
Cracking game, this. I’m probably not telling you anything you cannot see with your own eyes but these are two evenly-matched sides. Korea still seem to be edging it in terms of territory/possession but this isn’t rugby and Uruguay are making the better openings. They have been one pass away from the opening goal a few times now.

Changes for Uruguay (64)
Uruguay blink first. Luis Suarez is withdrawn and Edinson Canavi comes on to appear in his fourth World Cup (see post just before kick-off).
We’ve now had as many substitutions as we’ve had bookings. And shots on target. Don’t tell me this game isn’t keeping you invested…

Wait for the social clips…
Rodrigo Bentancur’s roulette on the edge of his own box was a thing of beauty – essentially because he managed to avoid losing the ball in such a dangerous position. Lovely to see.
Expect social media clips to follow (assuming four games in a day isn’t diluting such gold).

Son concern & Caceres booked (57)
Now this will be a worry. South Korea captain Son Heung-min is down and in pain after Martin Caceres catches his heel. He’s back on his feet now, which is good news.
Caceres is booked for the challenge – that is the game’s first booking.

Korea ask for a penalty check (53)
South Korea corner causes a few issues in the Uruguay penalty box. Kim Jin-su heads to the ground after some gentle persuasion by Rodrigo Bentancur and referee Clement Turpin gives us all a quick pause as VAR has a look, but unsurprisingly the game swiftly returns to action.

Second half… CHECK
We’re back under way at Education City Stadium. No half-time changes in personnel for either side. Quick shout for Napoli’s Uruguay right-back Mathias Olivera, who created two of the game’s six chances in that first half.
Let’s see if he can help make something happen in this second 45.

Felipe has enjoyed it too
The more technical Koreans have the majority of possession, but Uruguay have had two clear chances to take the lead tonight. Nunez scuffed a chance in front of goal and defender Diego Godin’s header in the 44 minute banged off the post. It’s been an entertaining first 45 minutes of football. Both sides will feel as if the match is playing exactly as they scripted. Two very different styles are clashing in the first match of Group H.
