England called up Hales for the T20 World Cup

Nottinghamshire batsman Alex Hales has been called up to England’s T20 World Cup squad as a replacement for the injured Jonny Bairstow.

The 33-year-old will also be available for the upcoming tour of Pakistan as Bairstow suffered a serious leg injury in a “freak accident” on the golf course last week.

Hales has not played for England since March 2019. He failed a drugs test and former England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan said it had led to a “complete breakdown of confidence”.

But the batsman’s form, coupled with Morgan’s retirement, has allowed him to force his way back into the voters’ minds.

The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed his retirement in a brief squad update issued on Wednesday.

The T20 World Cup, which will be held in Australia, starts on October 16.
